The Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has said that President Yameen and his Government enjoys the full support of the people of the Maldives; what the Government has done for the development, stability, progress, and prosperity of the country are well recognised by the people, benefits of which are realised every day in the country. The Minister made these remaks following a news article today by the BBC, which claims that there are attempts to overthrow the democratically elected Government of the Maldives.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today hosted the Temporary Centre for UK visa application, organised by the High Commission of the United Kingdom to the Maldives. The Centre was opened from 0900 hrs to 1730 hrs today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A total of thirty one applicants had their application forms and biometrics collected in order to process their UK Visa.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today ratified the ‘Protection of Reputation and Freedom of Expression’ bill, which was passed by the Parliament on 9th August 2016. Protection of Reputation and Freedom of Expression Act aims at preventing malicious defamation and protecting the reputation of individuals. The Maldives Constitution of 2008 sets out an expanded Bill of Rights, including freedom of expression (article 27) and a right to reputation and good name (article 33), and freedom of media (article 28). At the same time, the Constitution also recognises in Article 16, on the need to regulate, by a legislation of the Parliament, on how the rights can be exercised. The Protection of Reputation and Freedom of Expression Act provides the required legal framework envisioned in Article 16 of the Constitution. 

H.E. Major General (Rtd) B.R.W.M.R.A.B Thoradeniya, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Maldives has paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives. During the meeting, held at the Ministry this morning, the High Commissioner expressed warm greetings and felicitations from the Government of Sri Lanka, to Minister Asim on his appointment as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives. High Commissioner assured his commitment to continue working closely with the Government of Maldives in further strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The Government of Maldives rejects the Joint Statement issued on 31 July 2016 by the Embassies of the United States, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, the British High Commission, and the Delegation of the EU to the Maldives, concerning the Draft Defamation Bill that is currently debated in the Maldives Parliament.
