Foreign Minister Dunya and Attorney General Anil meets with the Foreign Minister of Canada

2 March 2016, Geneva; Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms Dunya Maumoon and Attorney General Mohamed Anil met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada His Excellency Mr. Stephane Dion, during their  ongoing visit to Geneva to attend the High Level Segment of the 31st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

During the meeting held this morning, Minister Dunya briefed Foreign Minister of Canada on the current political situation in the Maldives, and informed of President His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s initiative for all party dialogue amongst political parties. The Minster and Attorney General also updated the aspirations of the Government to maintain peace and stability, as well as to uphold the rule of law and human rights in the country.

Minister Dunya also highlighted some of the current issues, including the Maldives leadership role during its chairmanship at AOSIS. She reiterated the Government’s commitment to continue to engage constructively with the international community. The delegations also exchanged information on issues related to human rights issues, including important initiatives at the Human Rights Council.

The Foreign Minister and Attorney General was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Dr. Hala Hameed, Director General at the Ministry Khadeeja Najeeha, Counsellor at Maldives Mission in Geneva Rishfa Rasheed and Director at the Ministry Shahiya Ali Manik.
