Peace be upon our prophet Mohamed Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, his family and his companions

Mr. Chairman, Mr. Secretary General, Excellencies

AssalamAlaikum Warahmathullahi Wabarakathuh,

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all delegations who have expressed their support in convening this Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers. Allow me to congratulate the Foreign Minister of Kuwait and the OIC Secretary General for convening this Extraordinary Meeting. We are here today to discuss the aggression on the diplomatic mission of Saudi Arabia in Tehran and the Saudi Consulate in Mashhad in the Islamic Republic of Iran and on the cause of Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Shareef.

Excellencies:

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and his Government and the people of Maldives strongly condemn the atrocious manner at which the Saudi Embassy and the Consulate were attacked by Iranian protesters. We extend our support to the Government of Saudi Arabia. An attack on diplomatic and consular Mission is of grave concern. And the failure to prevent these attacks by the host country represents a serious breach of two of the most important international conventions that we all pledge to abide by.

The Maldives calls upon the Government of Iran to take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of these atrocious crimes are brought to justice. We also call upon the Government of Iran to respect the international conventions by ensuring diplomatic and consular privileges and uphold the rights entitled.

Allow me to recall the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises. The host Government has a solemn responsibility to take all necessary steps to protect and safeguard diplomatic and consular premises against any damage. The inactivity to do so is a clear violation of the Diplomatic, and Consular Relations Conventions.

Excellencies,

Islam is not only a religion; it is a civilization; one that teaches and promotes peace, tolerance, compassion, and above all, modernity. To enjoy the glory of the true values of Islam, we, the Muslims, should stand united. We should adhere to the principles of OIC Charter that obligates us not to interfere in the domestic affairs of our Member States. It requires us to respect sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of each Member State. Our unity as a Muslim Ummah depends entirely on the stability in our countries.

Excellencies,

Ignorance promotes intolerance, which leads to radicalism, and radicalism breeds terrorism. The greatest challenge facing the Muslim Ummah today is terrorism carried out in the name of Islam. The Maldives condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. And we call upon countries of the world to take a strategic decision to promote a culture of respect in their societies as a tool to fight against the menace of terrorism.

Excellencies:

The Maldives continues to be concerned over the situation in Palestine. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and the Government of Maldives condemn Israel’s illegal settlements in Palestine. We call on countries around the world, to support the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital and to recognize its sovereignty in Palestinian territories in the pre-1967 borders. Maldives believes Al-Quds is an integral part of the Palestinian Territory.

The Maldives supports the peaceful resolution of conflicts and we are confident that this would lead to strengthening the global fight against terrorism. The Maldives does not believe that the use of violence to achieve religious or political goals is justifiable in any circumstances. Violence is not the answer to disagreements. Instead, tolerance, dialogue, and collaboration must be the means for resolving our differences. Let us not allow chaos to rise in our societies due to our differences. Let us hold hands and unite to combat terrorism and ensure peace in our Ummah.

Thank you.

WassalamAlaikumWarahmathullahiWabarakathuh.
