3 December 2015, Male’; Foreign Minister Ms Dunya Maumoon hosted a function last night to celebrate the two year achievements of President Yameen’s Foreign Policy and 50 years of Maldives membership at the UN. The function was graced by His Excellency President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Diplomats and senior officials of the UN agencies and the Government. A minute of silence observed in the memory of State Dignitary Late Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi before Ms. Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs delivered her welcome remarks. His Excellency President Yameen delivered the keynote address.
Speaking at the function, Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted on the extraordinary progress Maldives has made in implementing the foreign policy goals over the last two years, under the guidance of President Yameen, despite domestic and international pressures. Minister also noted that the most important thrust of Maldives Foreign Policy is to make the country economically resilient. To do so the Government under the leadership of President Yameen has engaged with countries in building collaboration and expanding bilateral and trade relations. Minister Dunya also acknowledged with appreciation, the continued contribution from the UN, in assisting the country’s developmental efforts over the span of five decades. She noted that the UN had in particular, helped the Maldives in strengthening and promotion of human rights, and, assisted our work towards democratic governance.
Minister Dunya’s speech was followed by a short video presentation compiled on the achievements made during the two years of foreign policy. .
President Yameen, in his remarks highlighted that global security cannot be ensured if some countries have a license to influence domestic affairs of the other and emphasised on the need for international organisation such as the UN to treat each every country with equal respect and impartiality irrespective of the size of the country. Sovereignty cannot be measured by the size nor the wealth of the country stated the President. Further, President Yameen acknowledged the importance of the role of the UN in maintaining global peace and security. Nonetheless, the President also called for reforming the UN in view of the rising threats to global security in today’s globalised world.
