10 September 2015, New York; The Maldives today co-sponsored the resolution to allow the Palestinians to hoist their flag at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Resolution “Raising the flags of non-member observer States at the United Nations” was adopted at the General Assembly today with an overwhelming majority of the United Nations member countries. A total of 119 out of 193 countries voted in favour of the resolution, with 8 voting against and 45 abstaining. The resolution will allow the flags of observer states, to be hoisted after the member countries flags. Palestine was admitted to the United Nations as an observer State on 29 November 2012.
Reflecting on the Maldives decision today, Ms Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that, “Maldives co-sponsorship of the resolution today is a clear expression of its continued solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Maldives has remained unwavering and strong in its call for the full realisation of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people and the right of Palestine to establish their statehood on the basis of a two-State solution. The Maldives also remains in solidarity with the Palestine in its efforts to obtain full membership at the United Nations.”
