26 July 2015, Male’; I extend my heartiest felicitations and sincere warm wishes to all Maldivians on the Golden Jubilee of our Independence. I am indeed very proud of our national achievements over the last half-century!
It also gives me great pleasure to welcome all foreign dignitaries who have arrived to join in our celebrations.
On this historic day, it is our duty to reflect on the sacrifices of our forefathers and reminisce on their vision for our nation in safeguarding our independence and sovereignty. We will always remember their determination to serve and protect the Maldives with courage and loyalty. Their memories will forever be carved in our hearts and spirits.
To attain greater national development and prosperity it is incumbent upon us to strengthen our bonds of friendship with the rest of the world. Our efforts in the international arena over the last fifty-years have put the Maldives’ on the world map- as a moderate Islamic country committed to consolidating its young democracy. Hence, our march towards progress should be premised on protecting our Islamic identity and advancing the economic resilience of all Maldivians. It should also be powered by a collective determination to stand tall in the international community; as a responsible global citizen and as an advocate for the security of small states. Our achievements in bringing the issues of climate change to the forefront of the global discourse will undoubtedly write our history and it will also shape our future.
I strongly believe that the course set for our nation by His Excellency President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom will take us to new democratic and economic horizons. As such it is my prayer that may the Almighty Allah protect our sovereignty and grant us the fortitude to stay independent forever.
We stand together in writing the chapters of our national story: the Maldivian Story.
