The Maldives recommends Jamaica to Strengthen efforts to combat Discrimination against Persons with disabilities

13 May 2015, Geneva, Switzerland; During its Universal Periodic Reviewheldthis morning the Maldives recommended Jamaica to strengthen efforts to combat discrimination against persons with disabilities and take specific measures to increase employment opportunities for them. The Maldives also recommended Jamaica to establish stronger measures to increase access to education particularly to those living in rural areas.

 In the statement the Maldives highlighted the achievements made by Jamaica such as the formation of a National Policy for Gender Equality and the  adoption of the charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms as well as the high percentage of women at the public decision making level in Jamaica. The Maldives also commended the formation of the recent social protection strategy of Jamaica and stressed on its importance in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups in the society.

 The Maldives also noted the challenges faced by Jamaica as a Small Island Developing State, especially with regard to climate change and commended Jamaica for their comprehensive climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
