Maldives recommends to the Marshall Islands to adopt and implement a comprehensive national disability policy

12 May, Geneva; The Maldives has recommended to the Marshall Islands to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities by promptly adopting and implementing a comprehensive national disability policy in full compliance with international standards. These remarks were made during the review of the Marshall Islands at the 22ndsession of the Working Group on Universal Periodic Review, held in Geneva yesterday.

At the statement delivered during its review, the Maldives also commended Marshall Islands on the recent advancements made in improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities including the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities in March this year.  The Maldives also commended Marshall Islands for the efforts made in eliminating violence against women by adopting the Domestic Violence Prevention and Protection Act in 2011 and encouraged Marshall Islands for effective implementation of the Act.

As member of the Alliance of Small Islands States (AOSIS) faced with severe consequences of climate change, the Maldives congratulated Marshall Islands for the progress it has made in the promotion and protection of human rights since its last review.
