08 May 2015 Geneva;The Human Rights Council has adopted the report of the Maldives' review under the Universal Periodic Review this evening.
The Maldives received 258 recommendations from 102 countries and accepted 132. Based on the Constitution of the Maldives the Government rejected 49 recommendations and left 77 pending; agreeing to report back on them at a later stage.
Speaking at the adoption Foreign Secretary H E Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed said that the UPR process is an effective, credible, and valuable instrument that enables countries to interact with each other on their human rights. He also stated that the Government is encouraged by the level of engagement and interest at national level.
This is the second review by the Council under the UPR. The Maldives' review was successfully concluded with countries praising the huge gains attained by the Maldives over the last four years.
