Today’s protest is not a peaceful one – FM Dunya

1 May 2015; Male’; The Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Ms. Dunya Maumoon has stated that the protest held by the Opposition was not a peaceful one; as claimed by its organisers. Speaking to a local TV channel this evening, Minister Dunya expressed her disappointment over the violent nature of the protest and stressed on the attacks against the officers of the Maldives Police Service.

The protest was organized by the Adhaalath Party, Maldivian Democratic Party and Jumhooree Party.

Foreign Minister Dunya also praised the patience and professionalism of the Maldives Police Service in handling the Protest.

Today’s protest began at 1600 hours at the Artificial Beach and proceeded to the Social Centre in Maafannu area. The organisers of the protest addressed the crowd and called on all gathered to topple the Government and confront the Police to this end. The protesters then proceeded towards the local market area and attempted to enter the Green Zone which had been restricted and barricaded by the Police. After issuing cautions the Police used teargas to disperse the protest. According to the Maldives Police Service protesters threw stones and other bottles at the Police line. The Police also highlighted that the pickup lorry used for the sound system of the protest sped through the Police barricade injuring some Police officers. Protesters also attacked Government offices including the Maldives Customs Service.

The Police Integrity Commission has also issued a press statement stating that the protest was not a peaceful rally.
