PRESS RELEASE

The Maldives reiterates its support to an independent Palestinian State 

24  March 2015, Geneva

Speaking at the Interactive Debate with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories at the Human Rights Council, the Maldives has reiterated its called on Israel to stop the grave human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories. 

The Maldives particularly highlighted the human rights violations in the Gaza strip, and called on to lift the blockade on Gaza by allowing the free movement of goods, including the much needed construction materials to provide shelter for those who are homeless after the Israeli attacks last year. The Maldives  also expressed concerns over the treatment of Palestinians arrested and detained in Israeli detention centres, particularly vulnerable groups, such as women and children. The Maldives  also reiterated its call on Israel to immediately halt its illegal expansion of settlements, dismantle the separation wall and to end its policy of occupation. 

The Maldives also delivered  a statement at the General Debate under Item 7, dedicated to the Humans rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories. In the Statement delivered, the Maldives  reaffirmed the Government’s position that Agenda item 7 must remain in the Human Rights Council, until the inalienable rights of the people of Palestine are realised. The Maldives  also condemned the recent statement made by the Prime Minister of Israel retracting its commitment to the two-state solution. 

Agenda Item 7, which deals with the Human Rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories had two major segments this session, namely, the Interactive Debate with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. and the General Debate. These agenda items were preceded by the oral update by the Independent Commission of Inquiry on the 2014 Gaza Conflict.
