12 March 2015, Male'; The Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Ms. Dunya Maumoon has said that the Maldives will work with its international partners in advancing national development. Speaking after her joint press conference with the Attorney General yesterday, the Foreign Minister said that “the Maldives has an engagement-first policy with regard to its relations with international organisations and friendly countries. The foundation of this relationship is, however, on mutual respect and close dialogue”.
“The Maldives firmly believes that its multilateral relations can only benefit if the engagement is constructive. We have had bitter experiences in the past when the Maldives was unfairly treated by some organisations. But we have consistently maintained that we will welcome constructive and close dialogue”, said the Minister. She also alluded to her remarks yesterday that some entities aligned with the opposition were lobbying with some international organisations for punitive action against the Maldives and expressed her appreciation that key international partners have chosen to work with the Government instead of believing the misrepresentations put forward by the opposition.
“We will always put Maldives-first”, said the Foreign Minister.
