The Maldives reiterates its commitment in ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities

10 March 2015, Geneva; During the Annual Interactive debate on the right of persons with disabilities held at the United Nations Human Rights Council today, Ms. Geela Ali, Charge’d’affaires , informed the Council of the work the Government is doing in implementing Article 19 of the Convention of Rights of persons with disabilities. This article reaffirms the equal right of all persons with disabilities to live in the community, with choices equal to others, and requires States Parties to take effective and appropriate measures to facilitate the full enjoyment by persons with disabilities of this right. Speaking at the debate, Ms. Ali, highlighted the work of the Government in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and to encourage them to live independently, such as the enactment of the Act on the rights of persons with disabilities, providing a special disability allowance, finding employment opportunities for them as well as the allocation of apartments under the social housing scheme for persons with disabilities.

Today’s debate was mandated by United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution 20/25. This session was attended by the staff of the Maldives Mission in Geneva.
