The Government of Maldives remains steadfast to consolidate the gains that Maldives has made, and further the system of democratic governance, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms Dunya Maumoon. Speaking at the High Level Segment of the twenty-eighth session of the Human Rights Council, Minister Dunya noted the importance of democracy to unleash the extraordinary potential of citizens to innovate, and become valuable contributors to, and beneficiaries of, economic prosperity. She further noted that democracy could only be guaranteed through the strict adherence to the rule of law, separation of powers, and the protection of basic liberties.
Minister Dunya informed the Council of the continued commitment and efforts of the Government to consolidate democracy, and to promote and protect human rights in the country. In this regard, she reiterated the importance of change that is organic, and the importance of policy space and time for institutions to grow. Outlining that many challenges still prevail, she remarked, “Maldivians are convinced that overcoming the challenges of democracy would require more, not less, democracy.”
In closing, Minister Dunya noted that meaningful change can only be brought about through normative changes in attitudes, beliefs and values. She urged the Human Rights Council, celebrating its 10th anniversary, to consider the importance of cultivating a culture of respect for human rights.
Maldives is currently serving its second term on the Human Rights Council. During her visit to participate in the High Level Segment of the Human Rights Council, Minister Dunya will meet with bilateral partners and international stakeholders.
