16 December 2014, Beijing; The Maldives has signed the Memorandum of Understanding on joining the Maritime Silk Route. The ceremony took place today, after the first Meeting of the Joint Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation being held in China. Minister of Economic Development Mr Mohamed Saeed signed the MoU on behalf of the Maldives. The delegation of Maldives at the ceremony included the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr Mohamed Shainee, Minister at the President’s Office Mr Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, and Ambassador of Maldives to China Dr Mohamed Faisal.
The MoU enables Maldives to take an active role in the construction of the 21st century Maritime Silk Route, and will strengthen information sharing on national economic development plans. The MoU on cooperation will also see more Chinese investment in the Maldives. The Joint Committee on Trade and Economic Development will implement the MoU.
Maldives expressed interest in joining the Maritime Silk Route during the visit of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to China, and during President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Maldives earlier this year.
