Friendly countries provide emergency water supplies to the Maldives

05 November 2014; Friendly countries have pledged to provide emergency water supplies to the Maldives following the current water crisis. In this regard, India, Sri Lanka, the United States of America and China have assured the Government of their support in this crisis.

The first flight carrying emergency water supplies from India landed this afternoon. Navy vessels with reverse osmosis capabilities from India and the United States of America are enroute to the Maldives. Additionally, Sri Lanka is sending emergency water supplies via every flight that comes from Colombo to the Maldives.

On behalf of the President, Government and people of the Maldives, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Dunya Maumoon has expressed sincere appreciation to the countries that have offered assistance to the Maldives in this time of need.

A serious fire incident at the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) yesterday afternoon has resulted in the total cutoff of water supply in the capital Male’. MWSC is the only source of water supply in the capital Male’.
