The Ambassador-designate of Maldives to the Kingdom of Belgium and to the European Union, His Excellency Mr Ahmed Shiaan has met with European Ambassadors accredited to the Maldives in Sri Lanka. The purpose of the visit is to familiarize and brief the EU Ambassadors on the government plans and engagements with the European Union. The discussions focused on matters of mutual importance and identifying the areas where Maldives and EU could work together bilaterally and multi-laterally. Ambassador-designate Shiaan briefed the Ambassadors regarding the foreign policy of His Excellency President Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He briefed the Ambassadors of the work of the Government of Maldives highlighting in particular the economic agenda of the President, the important legislations passed and the achievements made during the past one year. Ambassador Shiaan also conveyed greetings from Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Dunya Maumoon and highlighted to the EU Ambassadors the importance of the challenges facing the small states, and how EU and Maldives, could work together on issues of mutual importance. Further, he briefed on the ongoing developmental projects and business opportunities in the Maldives for EU investors.
During the visit Ambassador-designate Shiaan met with Ambassadors from EU, UK, France, Norway and Italy. He was accompanied by the High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Honorable Zahiya Zareer.
