15 October 2014, Male; The Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has conducted a capacity building workshop on Human Trafficking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dunya Maumoon inaugurated the half-day workshop. Twenty officials from the Ministry participated in the training.
During her remarks at the Opening session of the Workshop, the Minister expressed concern that human trafficking is becoming a thriving criminal industry, and outlined some of the capacity building initiatives that need to be taken to combat human trafficking in the Maldives. She also highlighted the progress that has been made in the area so far, most notably she highlighted the enactment of the landmark legislation to combat trafficking in the Maldives in December 2013 and expressed hope for a complete resolution of the pull and push factors of human trafficking in the Maldives.
Certificates of participation were handed out by Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Head of FOSIM.
FOSIM was established within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in January 2014. The Government of the Maldives has been working closely with IOM to improve migration management and prevent human trafficking since 2011.
