14 October 2014, Male’; Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Dunya Maumoon graced the opening of the 3rd Project Steering Committee and Implementing Agencies meetings for the project on ‘Empowering Rural Communities: Reaching the Unreached’, held this morning at Traders Hotel in Male’.
The Project Steering Committee and Implementing Agencies meetings for the sub regional project participated by Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Nepal; and funded by the SAARC Development Fund (SDF) is held from 13-14 October. During her keynote address, Minister emphasised the tremendous promise Information Communication Technology hold as an enabler of social and economic development and stressed on the importance of providing access to such technology.
The Minister further acknowledged the establishment of the 50 community e-centers in the Maldives under the project by the end of 2014. She highlighted the importance of these centers in connecting and reaching to a large number of remotely located communities and provision of services as well as opening of new opportunities for livelihood development.
During the ceremony, the Minister congratulated the implementing agencies for their effort and great accomplishments throughout the project. She also thanked the SAARC Development Fund for the success of the project and expressed hope for the SDF to become a key enabler of development in the region. Minister Dunya also congratulated SDF for operationalising their Economic and Infrastructure Window, opening up prospects for bigger development projects in the region.
The meetings were attended by senior delegates of the Implementing agencies from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Nepal as well as the Chief Executive Officer of SAARC Development Fund.
