Former President, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan has departed Male’ today to attend the General Debate of the 69th Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly. President Waheed will be heading Maldives delegation this year as a Special Envoy of the President to the General Debate. The delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Dunya Maumoon, Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Mr Ahmed Sareer, and the staff of the Permanent Mission. President Waheed will be addressing the United Nations General Assembly on behalf of the Republic of Maldives, later this week.
The General Debate will be preceded by the 29th Special Session of the General Assembly on the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Secretary General’s Climate Summit. Minister Dunya is scheduled to speak at both events.
On the sidelines, Minister Dunya will also host an Informal Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers, and participate in the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting. The Maldives delegation will also hold a number of bilateral meetings with other countries.
The 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly began on 16 September 2014. On 21 September 2014, the Maldives celebrated its 49th anniversary of membership at the United Nations.
