“The celebration of the Fourth of July is not just a celebration of an anniversary but a celebration of freedom, liberty, and justice” says Foreign Minister Dunya

07 July 2014, Male’; Her Excellency Ms. Dunya Maumoon made these remarks attending the reception held to commemorate the 238th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America.

Speaking at the reception, Minister Dunya conveyed warm greetings and good wishes on behalf of the President Yameen and remarked that the celebration of the Fourth of July is not just a celebration of an anniversary but a celebration of freedom, liberty, and justice.

Minister underscored that the declaration of independence was first signed in 1776 by the founding fathers, the United States has become a beacon of hope for millions around the world.

Furthermore, the Minister stated that the United States is a close and trusted partner of the Maldives and next year would mark the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United States. She also highlighted that Maldives will continue to work with the US in suppressing terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, organized crimes, drug trafficking, and other security issues.

Minister expressed appreciation for the assistance and cooperation from the United States in field of defence and security, particularly for the continued training through Joint Military Exercises.

Minister also thanked Ambassador Sisson and Embassy staff who have monitored and assisted the Maldives in its efforts to stop Human Trafficking.

Concluding the speech Minister expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of the United States for the continued support, engagement and assistance towards the progress of the nation.
