10 June 2014, Geneva; The Maldives is participating in the 26th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council which commenced today in Geneva.
The Maldives will engage in the debate on important human rights country situations such as the Syrian Arab Republic, Palestine and DPRK. The Maldives today responded to the opening statement by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navi Pillay, who made her final statement to the Council. The Maldives condemned the gross human rights violation of the rights of Palestinian people and expansion of illegal settlements by Israel, the occupying power. The Maldives expressed grave concern at widespread and systematic violence in the Syrian Arab Republic and the lack of response and action from the international community.
In her statement delivered today, Her Excellency Ms. Iruthisham Adam, Ambassador/ Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Offices in Geneva, reiterated the commitment of the Government of Maldives to the promotion and protection of human rights. She also reiterated challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as the Maldives in implementing international obligations, and called for technical assistance to member states to better address them.
The Maldivian delegation will be involved in negotiations on a number of important human rights issues, specifically on rights of women, independence of judiciary, role of Parliament in the UPR process, climate change and human rights and other areas that are key priorities for the Maldives at the Council. The Maldives is in the core-group which is leading a high level panel “Power of Empowered Women 2014” with the participation of inspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs from around the world in a global conversation on equality and women’s economic empowerment.
The Maldives expressed gratitude to Madam High Commissioner Pillay for her role and personal engagement as the High Commissioner during the past 6 years.
The Maldives is currently in its second term of membership of the Council. The Maldives is being represented at the session by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Offices in Geneva.
