Issued By
Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms Dunya Maumoon departs to Geneva to attend the High Level Segment of the 25th Session of the Human Rights Council scheduled for 3-6 March 2014. As the head of Maldives delegation, the Minister will be delivering her statement at the High Level Segment on 3 March 2014 at 1350 hrs. The Minister is scheduled to meet with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Navi Pillay, United Nations Secretary General, Ban ki Moon, OIC Secretary General and other bilateral partners to discuss issues of mutual interest during the sidelines of the Session.
The Maldives was re-elected for the Human Rights Council for the term 2014 to 2016 last November at the elections held at the United Nations General Assembly. Maldives is the smallest country ever to serve in the Council membership. The Maldives seat at the Council is represented by the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva.  The Maldives’ policy at its second term at the Council will be based on its belief that establishing structural frameworks alone is not sufficient for human rights promotion; it requires cultivating values as well.
The Maldives delegation to the session includes H.E. Ms. Iruthishaam Adam, Permanent Representative / Ambassador of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Shiaan, Acting High Commissioner, Maldives High Commission in London and Ms. Rishfa Rasheed, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva.
