16 November 2013, Maleâ€™; The Presidential election run-off in the Maldives has begun this morning at 0730hrs and would close at 1600hrs. The Elections Commission of the Maldives has announced that there are 239,165 eligible voters for this election.
The two candidates, Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayoom of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) who came first and second respectively in the first round are contesting in todayâ€™s run-off.
A total of475 ballot boxes are placed at different locations across the country and overseas.The 7 boxes placed overseas include 2 boxes in Colombo, Sri Lanka; 1 box in New Delhi, 1 box in Thiruvananthapuram, India; 1 box in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; 1 box in London, UK; and 1 box in Singapore.
Similar to the first round of the Presidential election which was held on the 9th of this month, international observers and monitors in addition to local observers will actively engage to ensure the credibility of the election.
Observers from local NGOs such as Transparency Maldives and Maldives Democracy Network, political parties, and independent commissions including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and Anti-Corruption Commissionwill also be active during the Elections.
