Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Calls on International Community to Exercise Patience

Issued By

6 October 2013, Male’; The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Dr Mariyam Shakeela today called on external parties to exercise maximum patience and calm as the Maldives is going through its Constitutional process of holding presidential election, the first round of which was held on 7 September 2013.

The Minister was responding to various statements and briefings made by certain external parties following the delay in holding the second round of presidential elections pursuant to the Supreme Court injunction to do so until a ruling is made on the on-going case of alleged serious irregularities in the election process.

Minister Shakeela assured friendly governments and concerned international organisations that the Government of Maldives would do everything possible to ensure that the election process is completed as soon as possible and a smooth transfer of power takes place on 11th of November 2013 as prescribed by the Constitution.

While the Government’s utmost responsibility is to respect the Constitution and the laws of the country, it would be most helpful if external parties refrain from making speculations or statements on the future course, as such inferences would not contribute to peace and harmony that the country so desires at this critical juncture, said the Minister. The Minister further noted that the law enforcement authorities were taking the necessary precautions to ensure that situation remains normal in the country.

Minister Shakeela further stated that the Government and the people of Maldives highly value the positive contribution and progressive engagement of the international community during all times of crisis in the past, and expects the same in the on-going situation.
