More than 50% have already voted in the Maldives election

7 September 2013, Male’; Voting has now begun and is progressing smoothly at all voting stations in the Presidential Elections in the Maldives. The last polling station to begin voting was the one in London, UK which began voting at 1300 hrs Male’ local time.

The Elections Commission of Maldives is estimating a more than 85% voter turnout for this election and reports that by 1400 hrs, more than 50% of the eligible voters have already voted. More information on the voter turnout can be found at http://bprs.elections.gov.mv/.  

Voting is progressing smoothly at all voting stations. Long lines had formed even before ballot boxes were opened and large numbers of voters continue to line up at all ballot boxes.

Polling will continue till 1600 hrs or when everyone who had lined up to vote before 1600 hrs finishes voting.
