Honorary Consulate of Belgium officially opens in Maldives

29 January 2017, Male'; Honorary Consulate of the Kingdom of Belgium was officially opened today.

The Consulate was inaugurated by the Former President of Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan. The agrément by the King of the Belgians appointing Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, as the Honorary Consul was handed over at the ceremony, by His Excellency Mr. Jan Luykx, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Republic of Maldives.  

Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan delivered a speech on the occasion, highlighting on the service of Dr. Shakeela to the Maldivian people, and the relations between the two countries. Foreign Secretary of Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed also spoke at the function assuring the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Honorary Consul’s Office to further enhance relations between the Maldives and Belgium. Dr. Mariyam Shakeela spoke at the event, thanking the Government of Belgium for the honour of being appointed as the Honorary Consul, and assuring the Government and Ambassador of Belgium of her full commitment and cooperation.

The function was held at the Consulate Office this morning, and was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps in Male’ as well as the business community.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Belgium. This is the first Honorary Consul appointed by Belgium in the Maldives.
