Foreign Minister Asim returns after attending OIC Foreign Ministers Extraordinary Session on Rohingya Muslim Minority in Myanmar

21 January 2017, Male; Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Dr Mohamed Asim has returned to the Maldives after concluding his official visit to Malaysia, to attend the OIC Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers on the Situation of Rohingya Muslim Minority in Myanmar.

Minister Asim delivered a statement at the Session. In his address, Minister called upon the authorities of Myanmar to intensify its efforts to counter incitement to hatred that leads to violence. He also urged neighboring countries to extend assistance to those fleeing the conflict.

At the sidelines of the OIC meeting, Minister Asim met with his Malaysian Counterpart, Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and the Secretary General of OIC, H.E. Dr. Yousef Ahmed Al Othaimeen.

Minister also visited the Embassy of the Maldives in Malaysia and met with the staff. During his interaction with the staff of the Embassy, Minister Asim also inquired about the challenges faced by the staff in undertaking their daily functions and discussed ways to strengthen the institutional capacity of the mission.

The Maldives delegation to the OIC Extraordinary session included Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ibrahim Shaheeb, Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia H.E. Mr. Mohamed Fahmy Hassan, Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia Ms. Ghaniya Abdul Ghafoor and Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms. Moomina Ibrahim.
