President of the Republic of Maldives sends a Message on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

Issued By

29 November 2016, Male'; President of the Republic of Maldives His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom sends a Message on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

The message reads as follows:

As we mark the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People, I wish to reiterate the unwavering support of the people and the Government of the Maldives to the people and the Government of the State of Palestine and their legitimate right for an independent State. The Maldives believes that that the only viable solution to the question of Palestine is the realisation of the two-State formula with the establishment of a strong, independent, and contiguous Palestinian State on the basis of the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital.

The perpetuating hostility and conflict in the occupied Palestine have compromised the countless UN resolutions, the Madrid Principles, the Oslo Accords, the Arab initiative, and Quartet roadmap that strive for a peaceful settlement. The Occupying Power, Israel’s continued expansion of settlement in Palestine and the increasing house demolitions by the Israeli Military offensive in the West Bank, including in East Jerusalem, and the new Israeli legislation aimed at legitimizing colonial settlement areas in the occupied territories and the most recent plans to ban the prayer calls in the mosques in the occupied city of Al-Quds and its suburbs would clearly undermine the Palestinian right to self-determination, and indeed violates international law.

It has been more than two decades since the signing of the Oslo Accords which laid the ground work towards a solution based on two independent States. Yet, the Israeli policy of land grabbing, the blockade on Gaza, the continuing expansion of illegal settlement, and the continuation of the apartheid policy towards the Palestinians in the occupied territories, represent the most enduring obstacles to peace.

As we mark this special day, the Maldives calls on the international community to exert maximum pressure on Israel to abandon the policies of colonialism and violence and give preference to peace.
