Director for South Asia and Afghanistan, at the UK Foreign Office calls on the Minister of Foreign Affairs

29 November 2016, Male'; Director for South Asia and Afghanistan at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Mr Own Jenkins has called on the Foreign Minister, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim.

At the meeting held at the Foreign Ministry this morning, the Foreign Minister noted the close bilateral relations between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, and discussed ways of further strengthening the existing ties in different areas including climate change, counterterrorism and governance. Minister Asim also expressed appreciation for making special arrangemets  in the past 3 consecutive years, to facilitate visa applications for Maldivians wishing to pursue higher studies in the United Kingdom.

Minister Asim and Director Jenkins also discussed ways to increase bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. Director Jenkins expressed hope that the friendly relations and cooperation that exist between the two counties will continue to prosper even though Maldives is no longer a member of the Commonwealth. He also noted the leadership role Maldives continues to play internationally, as chair of the AOSIS.

Foreign Minister was accompanied by Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Foreign Secretary and Ms. Fathimath Liusha, Senior Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Director Jenkinswas accompanied by His Excellency Mr. James Dauris, British Ambassador to Maldives.
