15 November 2016; Minister Asim met with Mr. Julien-Christophe Belliard, the Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs at the European External Action Service today.
During the meeting with Mr. Belliard, Minister Asim highlighted the importance of continuing the EU-Maldives Policy Dialogue, which has proved to be a great success and a useful platform to discuss issues of relevance to both parties, such as climate change, countering terrorism, strengthening democracy and governance and improving trade and tourism cooperation between the Maldives and the EU. Minister Asim also informed about the re-election of the Maldives as the Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States for a second term.
Mr. Belliard expressed his appreciation for the leadership role played by the Maldives during CoP 21 in reaching a consensus agreement and noted that the re-election of Maldives as Chair of AOSIS is a clear recognition of the successful leadership by Maldives. He called on the Maldives to continue its international efforts as Chair of the AOSIS and voice of small island developing states (SIDS) in fighting climate change, and said that the EU will always support SIDS in this arena.
Minister Asim also met with Mr. Gunnar Weigand, Managing Director of EEAS. Discussions during their meeting focused on continuing EU-Maldives cooperation on strengthening democracy and good governance.
The meeting was attended by H.E. Ahmed Shiaan, Ambassador of Maldives to Belgium and the European Union, Counsellor Fathimath Ghina and EU Affairs Advisor Ms. Nektaria Margaroni at the EEAS Headquarters.
With these two meetings, Minister concluded his official visit to Brussels.
