Home Minister responds to BBC article claiming attempts to overthrow Maldives Government

25 August 2016, Male'; The Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has said that President Yameen and his Government enjoys the full support of the people of the Maldives; what the Government has done for the development, stability, progress, and prosperity of the country are well recognised by the people, benefits of which are realised every day in the country. The Minister made these remaks following a news article today by the BBC, which claims that there are attempts to overthrow the democratically elected Government of the Maldives.

Minister Azleen further stated that continuing efforts by the Government which has restored stability in the country, and which is having a positive impact on the economy, business and the job market, are recognised by everyone, and is testimony to President Yameen’s efforts in reviving the Maldives economy.

Minister Azleen also said that while the Constitution and the relevant national laws set out clear procedures and mechanisms to change the Government in the Maldives, any attempts to overthrow the government is undemocratic and contrary to the laws, and will not succeed. The Minister further stated the national security forces will not give any opportunity for anyone to attempt at overthrowing the elected Government, which remains firm in its position to govern the country and fulfil its responsibilities as normal.
