12 June 2016; The Maldives is the Country of Honour at the 4th China-South Asia Expo, and was well represented at the 24th China Kunming Import and Export Fair, which was opened this morning in Kunming. The Speaker of Majlis Honorable Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed represented the Maldives as Special Envoy of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during the opening ceremony. Speaker Maseeh delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony.
In his address Speaker Maseeh highlighted on the enhanced bilateral and economic corporation between the Maldives and China. He also thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping and the people of China for the valuable assistance provided for the development projects in the Maldives.
Speaker Maseeh and Vice Premier of State Council of China, Mr Wang Yang inaugurated the Maldives Pavilion at the Expo. Minister of Economic Development of Maldives, Mohamed Saeed and Maldives Ambassador to China, Mohamed Faisal also participated in the opening ceremony.
Prior to the opening ceremony of the Expo, Speaker Maseeh made a courtesy call on Vice Premier Wang Yang. During the call, the Speaker briefed on the progress of on going development projects funded by China and reiterated Maldives commitment to China-led development initiative such as Belt and Road initiative.
This evening, Speaker Maseeh also met with the Party Secretary of Yunnan CPC Committee, Li Jiheng and discussed cooperation between Yunnan Province and the Maldives.
This year’s Expo will continue for a week, which will conclude on Friday, 17 June 2016.
