The Foreign Secretary, H.E Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed has met with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, H.E Mr. Kamalesh Sharma. The meeting was held today at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.
During the meeting the Foreign Secretary briefed the Secretary General on the recent political developments in the Maldives, including the Prosecutor General’s decision to appeal Former President Nasheed’s conviction.
During the meeting, the Secretary General conveyed his best wishes to the Government and people of Maldives on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Independence. Mr Sharma also congratulated the Government for the wonderful celebrations that were organised in the Maldives in the last few days.
Discussions between the Foreign Secretary and the Secretary General also focused on the recent debate that took place in the People’s Majlis regarding the Maldives’ membership of the Commonwealth. The Secretary General expressed hope that the Maldives would remain a valued and active member of the Commonwealth family.
The Foreign Secretary was joined by Mr. Hassan Shifau, Acting High Commissioner at the High Commission of Maldives in London. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Secretary General (Political), Dr Josephine Ojiambo and some members of the Secretariat.
