08 May 2015, London; The Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E Ms. Dunya Maumoon has today met with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, H.E Mr. Kamalesh Sharma as part of her visit to the United Kingdom.
During the meeting the Minister briefed the Secretary General of recent political developments in the Maldives and reaffirmed the Governmentâ€™s commitment to working closely with the Commonwealth.
The Minister also informed the Secretary General of the success of Maldivesâ€™ recent review under the Universal Periodic Mechanism (UPR). Ms Maumoon highlighted the extraordinary progress Maldives has made on the promotion and protection of human rights and emphasised the Governmentâ€™s commitment to engaging constructively with international organisations like the Commonwealth to ensure further progress is achieved.
The Secretary General commended the efforts the government had made in implementing the recommendations of the UPR and expressed the Commonwealthâ€™s appreciation for Maldives commitment to working closely with the Commonwealth. Both the Secretary General and the minister agreed the importance of ensuring that all concerned work closely to maintain a harmonious political environment.
The Secretary General was joined by Deputy Secretary General (Political), Dr Josephine Ojiambo and other senior members of Secretariat staff. The Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mr Hassan Shifau was also in attendance at the meeting.
