Maldives - UK discuss 50 years of formal ties

06 March 2015, London; The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Her Excellency Ms Dunya Maumoon, has today met with Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, The Rt Hon. Hugo Swire MP.

During the meeting, the Ministers spoke of the long history of good relations between the Maldives and the UK, and reaffirmed the commitment of their Governments to continuing to strengthen Maldives-UK relations. Foreign Minister Dunya explained that this year was of particular importance as it marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Minister went on to inform Minister Swire of the on-going preparations being made to celebrate the milestone and expressed her hope that a commemorative event would also take place in the UK.  

Minister Dunya further took the opportunity to brief Minister Swire on the current political situation in the Maldives. Minister Swire thanked the Minister and expressed hope that the Maldives and the UK would continue to engage constructively on issues of mutual concern.

Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and European Union, H.E Mr Ahmed Shiaan and Minister at the High Commission, Mr Hassan Shifau were also in attendance at the meeting held at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
