16 December 2013, London; The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Her Excellency Ms Dunya Maumoon, has today met with Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, The Rt Hon. Hugo Swire MP. Acting High Commissioner to the UK, Mr Ahmed Shiaan, was also in attendance at the meeting held in Whitehall, London.
During the meeting, the Ministers spoke of the long history of good relations between the Maldives and the UK, and reaffirmed the commitment of their Governments to continuing to strengthening Maldives-UK relations.
Additionally, H.E. Ms Maumoon and Mr Swire discussed increasing the quality and quantity of business links between Britain and the Maldives, and considered a number of mutually beneficial possibilities to increase business opportunities for investors.
Foreign Minister Dunya, thanked the British Government for sending visa officers to Maldives to issue student visas but also requested to simplify the procedure of visiting Colombo to obtain UK student visa, which is discouraging prospective Maldivian students to coming to the UK for higher studies. Minister Swire shared his intentions in finding a permanent solution to the issue.
