Statement by Foreign Minister on the Death of 3 Year Old Mohamed Ibthihaal

29 January 2015 Male’, The Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon has expressed deep shock and concern over the death of three year-old Mohamed Ibthihaal who was found dead with severe bruises on the island of Rakeedhoo.

Minister Dunya stated that the death of the boy once again underscores the critical need to strengthen the national child protection mechanism and highlights the absolute vulnerability of children in society. While welcoming the prompt action by the Prosecutor General and other state institutions to investigate the matter, Minister Dunya further reiterated President Yameen’s call to bring the perpetrator of this heinous crime to justice and noted the importance of full implementation of the Anti-Domestic Violence Act and giving full effect to the Maldives’ obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“Every child is a precious gift from God who makes our lives joyous and wholesome, and it is our duty to protect and safeguard them” said Minister.
