Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh felicitates President Yameen on his assumption of presidential office

The Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Dr Manmohan Singh has sent a congratulatory message to the new President of Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, on his assumption of presidential office.

In the message, the Indian PM highlighted that President Yameen’s victory is also a triumph for the forces of democratic pluralism in the Maldives. He expressed his confidence that, under President Yameen’s stewardship, the Maldives would move further ahead on the path of stability, peace, progress and development.

Emphasising that India and the Maldives are bound together by historic, cultural and civilizational ties and that the geographic proximity of the two countries provided a strong foundation for the existing close and friendly relations, Prime Minister Dr. Singh reiterated that India attaches the highest importance to its relations with the Maldives. Wishing President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom a successful tenure, the PM gave his assurance of India’s full support to the Maldivian President’s endeavour to provide a peaceful and prosperous future for the country’s people.
