Voting ends in the run-off election

16 November 2013, Male’; Polling has ended in the Presidential election run-off held in the Maldives today. However, all eligible voters who lined up to vote before 1600 hrs will be able to cast their votes. Polling had proceeded smoothly and peacefully with no major incidents being reported.

The counting of votes will start at 1630 or half an hour after voting finishes, at the respective polling stations. Preliminary results are expected to be released at midnight tonight. The Elections Commission states that the final result is expected to be announced tomorrow morning. The Speaker of the People’s Majlis has confirmed that the new President and his Vice President will be sworn in a special seating of the Majlis held tomorrow, 17 November 2013.
