About The Mission

Role, Aim and Objectives

The Embassy of the Maldives to Belgium and Mission to the European Union aims to represent Maldivian interests towards Belgium and the key EU institutions.

Headed by a resident Ambassador the Embassy/Mission assists all manner of diplomatic, economic and cultural work linking the Maldives with Belgium and the European Union.

Established on 1st April 2008, and therefore officially being the first ever resident Maldivian presence in Belgium, the Embassy/Mission is situated in the heart of the EU “quarter”.

It is important to highlight the relevance and importance of having a resident Embassy/Mission in Brussels. Understanding the EU’s three key institutions, how they interact, and exactly when the Maldives’ voice should be heard is crucial to the engagement the Mission has in Brussels.

Essentially acting to lobby the Belgian government and the EU, and to be informed of relevant policy proposal and issues that the Maldives could eventually benefit from, is one key aspect of the Mission’s work.

The Mission also assists with preparation for visiting delegations; attends and represents the Maldives at European Commission, European Parliament and Council meetings; seeks to disseminate and discuss relevant policy areas and initiatives with key stakeholders and above all aims to increase exposure for the Maldives within the Brussels arena.

Ambassador-Designate of Maldives to the Kingdom of Belgium H.E Mr Ahmed Shiaan arrived in Brussels and assumed office as the Head of Mission on 19 January 2015.
