Maldives-Belgium Relations

Diplomatic Relations

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Belgium on 3 October 1977. The Belgium Embassy accredited to the Maldives is based in New Delhi.

The Maldives Embassy to Belgium was established on 27th October 2010.


Belgium is a strong advocate for global environmental protection and was instrumental in framing the EU environment policy which recognizes the critical importance of the environmental issues facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS). EU was an important partner to SIDS during the negotiations for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol of 1997.

Belgium signed the Kyoto Protocol on 29 April 1998 and ratified the Protocol on 31 May 2002.

Belgium was one of the first countries, following the Rio Summit in 1992 to introduce at the national level, eco-taxes penalizing polluting effluents and promoting investment in environmentally sound technologies.

In addition to contributions to the Global Environment Facility, the UNDP and the Lome Convention among others, Belgium donated $7.15 million bilaterally for various initiatives and projects in SIDS in 1998.

Tsunami Assistance

Belgium provided US$ 80,000 through Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for immediate provision of agricultural inputs to worst affected fisher and farmer groups in the Maldives in 2005. The project has been completed.

Belgium committed US$ 1,280,000 through the UNDP for the ‘Emergency Shelter response and recover for the tsunami affected people of Maldives’ project implemented by UNDP in 2006. As of 3 September 2007, it has disbursed US$658,762. The project is still ongoing.

Belgium provided US$ 782,793 through the UNDP for the ‘Restoration of Critical Infrastructure’ project implemented through UNDP in 2005. The project is still ongoing.

Belgium assistance to the Maldives for human resource development began in 1983. It consists of short and long-term training in various fields such as Health, Tourism, and Marketing etc.
