Political Affairs

Maldives plays a unique role in global affairs. In the decades since Independence, Maldives has developed robust relationships with a wide variety of partner states, international institutions and nongovernmental stakeholders, and taken a lead role in international negotiations on climate change and environmental protection.

Since Independence, Maldives has fostered ever stronger relations with its European Union partners.

Maldives foreign policy is founded upon pursuing the key national interests of national development, international peace and security, promoting human rights and upholding the principles of the UN Charter.

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Belgium on 3 October 1977.

In Brussels, the heart of Europe, representatives from the Maldives Mission to the EU regularly represent Maldivian interests in the relevant bodies of the European Union.
