Preliminary Results Announced for the Presidential Election of the Maldives

10 November 2013, Male’; The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the preliminary results of the presidential election held today. The preliminary results are as follows:

Qasim Ibrahim, Jumhooree Party                                                                 23.34% (48,131 votes)

Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Progressive Party of the Maldives               29.73% (61,295 votes)

Mohamed Nasheed, Maldivian Democratic Party                                           46.93% (96,747 votes)

Invalid                                                                                                                     2,331 votes 

A total of 208,504 voters, amounting to more than 87.2% of a total of 239,105 eligible voters, voted in this election. The polling day went smoothly and ended without any major incidents. A total of 3,840 observers and 2,727 monitors including 70 foreign observers and 34 foreign monitors were active during the election to ensure its credibility and transparency.

As scheduled, Election Commission is expected to hold the run-off between the first and second placed candidates on Sunday, 10 November 2013.
