The volunteer teachers for 2012 under the International Volunteer Programme (IVP) arrives in Maldives
The volunteer teachers for 2012 under the International Volunteer
Programme (IVP) have arrived in the Maldives end of December 2011.
Before being placed in their respective islands, the volunteers spent some time
in Male’, where they received information about Maldivian history and culture
from a local volunteer, as well as learnt about Islam and the nature of social
work in the Maldives. An intensive orientation session was held in
Dhiffushi in Kaafu Atoll to help prepare them for island life where they had
the opportunity to stay with local families, as well as visit a local school
and meet the teachers.
The volunteers also had a meeting with President Mohamed Nasheed on the
5th of January 2012. The volunteers were warmly welcomed by the
President and they were able to share with him their thoughts and expectations
about volunteering in the Maldives.
The International Volunteer
Programme (IVP) is run by the High Commission of Maldives in association with Friends
of Maldives (FOM) a UK based organization, and the Maldivian Volunteer Corps
(MVC). It was launched in 2009 with a view to give British teachers an
opportunity to share their language and culture with the Maldives as well as
experiencing island life and Maldivian culture.
